World Science Day For Peace and Development

New Delhi: Celebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.

“By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable,” said Dr. Sandeep Marwah President of AAFT University in a webinar organised by WPDRF-World Peace Development And Research Foundation in association with IFUNA- Indian Federation of United Nations Associations.

This year, at a time when the world is struggling with the global COVID-19 pandemic, the focus of World Science Day is on “Science for and with Society in dealing with the global pandemic.”

Throughout this unprecedented health crisis, UNESCO, as the UN Agency with the field of science in its mandate, has endeavoured to bring science closer to society and to bolster the critically needed international scientific collaborations. From the science perspective, UNESCO’s response to COVID-19 is structured around three major pillars: promoting international scientific cooperation, ensuring access to water and supporting ecological reconstruction. The event was supported by ICMEI- International Chamber of Media And Entertainment Industry.

United Nations Day Observed at ICMEI

NOIDA: “Though humanity has always counted its war casualties in terms of dead and wounded soldiers and civilians, destroyed cities and livelihoods, the environment has often remained the unpublicized victim of war. Water wells have been polluted, crops torched, forests cut down, soils poisoned, and animals killed to gain military advantage,” said Dr. Sandeep Marwah President of ICMEI at a session conducted by Environment Committee of ICMEI in association with AAFT University and World Peace Development And Research Foundation.

United Nations Environment Programs UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

“The United Nations attaches great importance to ensuring that action on the environment is part of conflict prevention, peacekeeping and peace building strategies, because there can be no durable peace if the natural resources that sustain livelihoods and ecosystems are destroyed,” added Dr. Marwah who is also patron to IFUNA- Indian Federation of United Nations Associations.

On 5 November 2001, the UN General Assembly declared 6 November of each year as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict.

World Tsunami Awareness Day Observed at ICMEI

Noida: The Environment Committee of ICMEI-International Chamber of Media And entertainment Industry in association with IFUNA- Indian Federation of United Nations Association jointly conducted the seminar on 5th November to observed World Tsunami Awareness Day.

“In December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day, calling on countries, international bodies and civil society to raise tsunami awareness and share innovative approaches to risk reduction,” informed Dr. Sandeep Marwah President of ICMEI and Patron to IFUNA in a webinar talking about environment and different conditions on Earth.

“Tsunamis are rare events but can be extremely deadly. In the past 100 years, 58 of them have claimed more than 260,000 lives, or an average of 4,600 per disaster, surpassing any other natural hazard. The highest number of deaths in that period was in the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. It caused an estimated 227,000 fatalities in 14 countries, with Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand hardest-hit,” added DR. Marwah.

By the year 2030, an estimated 50 per cent of the world’s population will live in coastal areas exposed to flooding, storms and tsunamis. AAFT School of Hospitality and Tourism Celebrated World Vegan Day

NOIDA: AAFT School of Hospitality and Tourism in association with ICMEI celebrated World Vegan Day by conducting a talk on Veganism on web. World Vegan Day is an annual event celebrated by Vegans around the world every 1 November. The benefits of veganism for humans and the natural environment are celebrated.

The event was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then Chair of The Vegan Society in the United Kingdom, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the organisation and the coining of the terms “vegan” and “veganism”

“Interestingly enough, Indian Diet is perhaps even more suited to veganism than most across the world. Not only does India have a significantly large amount of vegetarians, but as such the culture for many is already primed to include veggies, fruits, dals, legumes, grains and cereals in their diets – all of which are plant-based by default, said Sandeep Marwah President of AAFT School of Hospitality and Tourism

“To adapt to veganism, the major challenge for Indians is to cut dairy products – we love our ghee coated rotis, curds and raitas as well as our ice creams and lassis. But alternatives are now available, with comparable taste to boot,” expressed Sushil Bharti Director Radio Noida 107.4FM.

“Actually, plant based alternatives are quite easy to find/obtain, and are becoming more and more affordable due to the rising vegan community in India. Plethora of alternatives exist – for protein, soya products are often widely consumed; with lentils and beans being another good source,” said Rajiv Mathur Director ICMEI.

“There’s actually a host of plant-based dairy products to choose from – even a simple staple like milk can be substituted with soya milk, almond milk, cashew milk, and so forth. Hemp milk can serve as a great source of omega 3, too. A healthy portion of leafy vegetables takes cares of vitamins, and as for Vitamin D – it can be tackled by  exposure to sunlight,” added Haripriya Thakur Director Events Marwah Studios.
