Delhi: The scale of interruption caused by COVID-19 to global tourism is shown
in a report on travel limitations from National Federation of Tourism And
Transport Cooperatives of India Limited that almost all global destinations
have enforced restrictions on travel since January 2020, including complete
bans on all travel as they work to contain the pandemic.
“According
to research carried out by UNWTO, as of 6 April, 96% of
all worldwide destinations have introduced travel restrictions
in response to the pandemic. Around 90 destinations have completely or
partially closed their borders to tourists, while a further 44 are closed to
certain tourists depending on country of origin,” informed Dr. Sandeep Marwah
President of ICMEI and Managing
Director of National Federation of Tourism And Transport Cooperatives of India
Limited.
Governments
have put public health first and introduced full or partial restrictions on
travel. With tourism suspended, the benefits the sector brings are under
threat: millions of jobs could be lost, and progress made in the fields of equality and sustainable
economic growth could be rolled back.
“Sure
We Are Going to Win- By Staying Home Today, We Can Travel Tomorrow”. A quote by Tourism bigwigs, summarizes this
message of harmony and hope, through which the NFTC calls for shared
responsibility among travellers and the tourism sector around the world to deal
with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic,” added Sandeep Marwah also Chair for
AAFT School of Hospitality And Tourism.
