Palau is a small island country in the Western Pacific with a population of around 21,000. Being a small island country, Palau takes keen interest in ocean related issues, climate change and sustainable development. The Palau economy is dominated by tourism, fishing, and subsistence agriculture. Long-run prospects for tourism have been bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific, the rising prosperity of industrial East Asia, and the willingness of foreigners to finance infrastructure development. Palau has friendly relations with India and one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations in April 1995, soon after their independence.
